Altimeter Watch: You’re climbing Mount Hood and you know you need to pace your ascent for maximum performance. So you check your Suunto Core altimeter at regular intervals to stay on track.

Suunto altimeters measure elevation using air pressure. An altimeter is useful for a load of outdoor activities, including running, biking, hiking, skiing, or snowboarding.

The Suunto Core gives you consistently accurate barometric information and a storm alarm that enables you to plan your next move with total confidence and greater safety.

Compass Watch: What are your bearings? Your Suunto Core compass measures bearings in degrees and uses the 4 cardinal directions. Adjust the declination for more accurate measurement depending on your location.

Snorkeling Watch: Grab your fins, mask, and snorkel and get ready for underwater adventure. Next time you’re exploring the ocean reefs, you’ll know how far down that bright blue fish swam with a depth meter that tracks your dive up to 30 ft/10 m.

Know how much light is left before you need to make camp with the sunrise and sunset alerts. I have enjoyed using SUUNTO wristop computers for years. I really like the design and low profile of the CORE watches that will be released in a few days. I am frustrated, that SUUNTO decided to leave out a heart rate monitor function on this watch. For a guy who likes to have one watch for most of my lifestyle I don’t see giving up my METRON until the lack of a heart rate monitor has been corrected.

Pricing Great – but seems a bit off Review by Techojappa – Houston, TX
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

As an outdoor enthusiast, I’m pretty excited to see Suunto’s new Core line. I agree it should probably have a heartrate monitor capability – but the other great features like storm alerts for example, keep it at a pretty high rating with me. The pricing seems a bit off however. I get the $249 price point for the Black/Yellow and the Green versions. Actually, I love the price for those. I also get the jump of $100 when going to a bit more bulky model (but I feel it’s a stretch for a cosmetic difference), and lastly I get the steel/steel price point. What I can’t swallow, is the price point on the aluminum and brown version having a $150 lift from the price of it’s sister models that are black/orange and light black. That all said, I’m still excited to snag the Core quick, hope this helps

As good as advertised!! Review by Anonymous – Essex, CT
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

The CORE’s form and function is a big improvement over its predecessor (X-Lander, etc.) It is less complicated, easier to read and use, and looks better, more modern. The face is larger which gives the watch a thinner feel. Maybe it is just me, but the compass and barometer seem to work better – more accurate. Overall, a very cool adventure watch

Technical gadgets; How did we live without them? Review by Robert – Hyattsville, MD
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

One can only wonder how we lived without this marvel prior to its conception and release. I admit that this is Suunto’s first iteration of the Core line; however, after giving the watch a work over I can’t imagine how they could improve this flagship. Purely for aestestics, but I would recommend that you spend the extra $100 for the Light Black, Black Orange model. If you really want to splurge, get the ALUMINUM Core. Again, great functionality, easy to navigate, and most importantly pertinent in its purpose. To the NICHE Retail crew, you guys rock. Your customer service and support is unparalleled

2 Weeks – still loving it Review by Bo – Portland, OR
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

Here’s the gist: This is really nice and well designed watch. For the accolades please see the other reviews that really do justice to this new product. It does, however, have some quirks you may know about. 1. The strap – at least on my white/green version is as bad as they say 2. The light. Don’t even think about using compass at night. If the watch is in the compass mode and you press the light button the backlight turns on and off every half a second. Very annoying. So much for orienteering. 3. Barometer. Overall it works fine however without any reasons it can shoot up (or drop down) by 20 or so hPa. Just to return to previous reading later on. I’ve seen it several times by now and with no change in weather (and not driving in the mountains) this is clearly a glitch.

Overall, the Core is well designed and easy to operate

Great, but have questions Review by Robert – Ft. Meade, MD
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

Recently purchased two CORE watches–Black/Orange and the Aluminum Core. Great effort on Suunto’s part, overall a relevant watch with user-friendly interface. Curiously, I too have noticed that the backlight flickers uncontrollably while operating in the Compass Mode. Is this a software hiccup and how can I/we resolve this issue? To the comment below; I’ve noticed that if you set the Barometric reference to Altitude vice Sea Level, the consistency and accuracy of your barometric readings will improve exponentially. If you need to find your city’s current elevation, go to weatherunderground.com and type in your city’s zip code. I like this watch, but somehow I’m not convinced that all the gremlins are gone. Maybe I should have waited to see what improvements Suunto would have implemented in the Core’s second iteration

nice product again from suunto Review by kurt vidal – Lyon, MI
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I own a vector which I’ve had about 5 yrs and was so happy w/it I decided to go with the new Core. The user interface on the core is much friendlier than the vector. I did expect the watch housing to be smaller than the vector but it looks to be about the same in both diameter and thickness. What I dislike about the core is the watchband itself. It may be prettier than the vector band, however, its much more flimsy. I had to replace the band on my vector 3 yrs after purchase so I dont expect this one to last more than a year. The vector band is much more robust and can withstand the harshness of outdoor use. I may have to see if I can cobble the vector band onto the core. All in all though, this is an excellent product, as I would expect to come from Suunto…nice job, just get us some more robust straps.

Suunto Core Review by Anthony Mounsey – Largo, FL
    Overall Rating: 2 stars

The altimeter/barometer and temp functions need more work, for all of the hype they certainly have some limitations. The orange strap with the black/orange model is a design error in my opinion. The black strap being backordered still and also being $50 is a bit of a disappointment. I also bumped it against the kitchen wall (drywall) and it left a mark on the rotating bezel. It would be nice to see some strength in the watch. The watch really has some cool functions but they don’t always work and overall it looks just like another lightweight black plastic watch that might have been made by timex. I dunno yet, I may see if yet a third battery gets it to start working normally, but I may just send it back.

Thanks for your review. We have fielded several complaints of Cores arriving dead or low on power. According to Suunto, this was an issue in a small number of early-production Cores and has since been addressed and fixed. If within your return period, give us a call to arrange return or exchange. Again, thanks for the feedback

Screw fell off! Review by Victor Pulido – Los Angeles, CA
    Overall Rating: 34 stars

i like the core watch. I bought the Orange/Black one but a screw fell off the first day that I wore it. I think the wristband will not last especially when you have to put it on and take off daily. They should’ve made the wristband more durable. I like it but my girlfriend said for the price I had to pay it should be more durable. She hated the orange but I like it! My everyday watch is the X-Lander.

Firstly, congratulation to Suunto on a great product! It is intuitive and very easy to use. I find the functions to be well-thought out and useful. As a landscape photographer the sunrise-sunset times are going to be invaluable. And as a snowboarder the alt-baro function is going to get a workout this coming season. The time is pretty accurate and keeps within 3-4 seconds a month. One gripe – I got the light black because the web photo showed an almost white face which offered great contrast under the black numbers. When I received the watch, the face was light to mid gray and the numbers do not stand out as much as I had hoped. Get it right Suunto – these are important points. Otherwise I am very happy.

Suunto Core Black/Orange Review by Preston – Fayetteville, NC
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

All I have to say is this is an outstanding watch. This is my first watch from Suunto. I am beyond impressed with it. It keeps perfect time. The dual time zone is perfect for me being deployed. I can always look at my watch and know what time it is without thinking about it. The desert climate doesnt fluctuate enough for the barometer to be effective. The compass is on par with any other compass I have used. It works very well and is very sensitive. I highly suggest getting the black band for the Black/Orange as the orange band is just horrific. Other than that the bezel ring is a little loose. Overall a great watch.

Core Black/Orange Thoughts Review by Matt Rajkowski – Suffolk, VA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I’ve been wearing the black/orange now for over a month and it’s been a great purchase so far. Here’s what I like: 1) Functionally it does quite a bit. I like the large dot-matrix display and the alarm works well. You also get temperature and barometer, and more. 2) It’s a nice accessory to wear under a sleeve or large enough to wear over, just like the Suunto pictures show you. Here’s what I don’t like: 1) The black/orange display is not as intense as any stock photo you will see online — even with the light on. 2) The orange band has gotten discolored within the first few weeks, turning a black color in some spots — it’s not dirt it’s actually chemically discolored. I haven’t been able to resolve this issue with anyone and my wife’s Lumi did the same thing (I’m trying though). I replaced it with a black band in the meantime which is nice.

The highs and the lows Review by Milosz – Vancouver, WA
    Overall Rating: 3 stars

This is a nice gadget and I enjoy using it but I have to admit there are some things that don’t stand up to the brand name. Altimeter: Real life test. Drove to the top Haleakala (Maui, HI) and set the watch to the known elevation (3055 m). Drove down, to the ocean level only to discover that I’m at ~650 m asl. That’s over 2100 ft! Come on Suunto!! Depth measures: On several occasions, while snorkeling, I’ve noticed that the maximum depth was not registered. I dove to approx. 5-6 meters and the maximum depth was still set at 0.5 m. Backlight: Some has already noted it but the blinking light when the watch is in the compass mode is really annoying. Would I buy it again? Probably. Did it match my expectations given my experience with other Suunto equipment? No, not really.

I’m a huge fan of the watch, accurate, it looks good, and very functional. The only downside of it is that it’s a big watch. So I just wear it on th inside of my wrist as opposed to the outside like a normal watch. But to be totally honest with you, I’ll buy one again in a heartbeat.

The Sunto Core is a fine watch but here are a few reservations: -Why are the digits so boxy if it has a dot matrix display? -weak backlighting. -year not displayed in date. -Thin looking watchband. -Stopwatch uses lesser display. Could have used the main digits for better visibility. -Cumbersome software interface. Hard to remember and not intuitive. Still, would I buy one? Yup. -Migs

Not for the Skinny-Wristed… Review by Simon – Santa Fe, NM
    Overall Rating: 3 stars

I really wanted to like the Suunto Core. It seemed to have all the features I wanted in a stylish package. Although there are cheaper watches out there with similar featrues, none of them have the slickness of the Core’s interface or its looks. So why only three stars? One reason: this thing is huge. It’s a good 2″ across the face, and about half an inch thick. I had hoped it would feel smaller than Suunto’s earlier designs, but sadly this isn’t the case, and I just couldn’t see myself wearing this monster on a daily basis. So, I reluctantly returned it. The thing that irritates me slightly is that Suunto has demonstrated that they can make a smaller watch with identical features with their Lumi women’s watch. I would happily buy that if it wasn’t for the, well, rather girly strap designs. So come on Suunto: not all of us guys have wrists like tree trunks – why not make a watch that we can feel comfortable wearing in any situation?

    Comments from The Staff:

Hmm… Well, Suuntos have traditionally been larager watches; you need some real estate in order to house all that technology. The Core could also be considered the most fashion-forward men’s Suunto model to date – and there’s definitely a move toward big watches. All in all, I’m sorry it didn’t work for you. Be sure to always check specs before buying to make sure the size is something that will work for you. Thanks for your feedback.

hmm.. Review by doug taylor – clayton ca.
    Overall Rating: 3 stars

I enjoy the watch and appreciate its functions; which are significant. I like the backlight quality and the versatility of the setup functions. Different variations of display etc. is fun to play around with. A few things which frankly, aren’t appreciated: 1. terrible instruction books and online support for basic problems. for example, there is no clear layout of the button strategies as identified in most seiko or casio manuals. further, as there is only sketchy overview marketting sort of tech stuff on the internet site, you are left wandering around wasting time and energy trying to figure out how to take best advantage of all the features of the watch. 2. the backlight blinks in the compass mode and I dont know how to correct this. i was also not able to find any sort of information on how to alleviate this problem, and even after removing the battery there is no fix to this annoying problem. if this turns out to be a design problem, this is something that should be discontinued. 3. the removal of the battery case cover is difficult with a coin as there is a tendency to overstress the threads after the first quarter turn. this creates a high potential for damage. Rather, there should be some explanation in the instructions to not push too hard after the initial loosening is accomplished to prevent accidental damage. Either that, or a coarse thread and a release rather than very fine pitch threads. OR, a special tool. 4. thermometer is innacurate unless the watch is fully removed from the arm. I would love to see some maker finally get an insulated watch which does have accurate temperature indication while on the arm. 5. the bezel feels cheap when it turns. not a solid feeling bezel at all and I worry about popping it off. a metal one would have been preferred, but i love the fact that it is round and turns both directions vs. my seiko.

Excellent New Suunto Watch Review by George – Dublin,CA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I currently own many Suunto watches(Vector’s,X6HR’s,Observers,T6, and T3)and just purchased the new Suunto Core Light Black model. I’m very pleased with the watch and the many functions. The watch functions are very intuitive and easy to figure out even without the manual. The positive display on the Suunto Core Light Black model is the easiest to see of all my Suunto watches. The watch is also large but it is easy to read the display. I have not had any of the problems as stated in previous reviews except I feel the rotating bezel could be tighter (it rattles just a little). I have not had battery problems as stated by some. They may have the backlight set to function when you push any button instead of just the lower right buttom. I have replaced the watchband with another Suunto Core accessory watchband. It is a nice feature that all Suunto Core watchbands are interchangeable and very easy to replace. I would have liked to see a metal case on the Core Light Black watch but the plastic case is holding up well. I have owned many watches from Highgear, Timex, and others but still feel that Suunto makes the best wristop computers. I have sent Suunto watches in to Suunto for a “spa treatment” and have always received great customer services.

Great – could be better Review by Gareth Baron – Redwood City, CA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I have had this watch for about 2 weeks and have to admit that it does very well at it’s advertised functions. For all the nay-sayers about the barometer, it’s only as accurate as you want it to be (ie you have to calibrate off an altitude – as do pilots in planes!). Also the comments about measuring wrist temperature are just niggles. Take the damn thing off your wrist for a couple of minutes! -or wear it outside your snow/mountaineering gear! Other than that it’s a great instrument. Things I would change/add (Suunto Marketing are you listenning ??) 1) The stopwatch should be in the large display – I use this for running as well as other outdoor activities 2) Add a lap marker button to the sopwatch – this would allow one to mark lap points but the display would continue to count up. Review of the times can be done after the workout. 3) Fix the compass/light blinking problem 4) Add some form of level detector to let you know that the compass is properly levelled (maybe a spirit level outside or an electronic equivalent) 5) Use a better reflective background for the negative display watches (this will make the display appear brighter). 6) Allow the user to configure the following: a. Backlight brightness b. Temperature display in dual mode also (C/F or F/C) c. Allow stopwatch display mode to be in the large or the small display d. Allow different fonts to be shown (fixed space fonts also please) Other than those ‘product improvements’ I really like this watch. I’m just adding my wish list to make a great product incredible. Keep up the good designs Suunto.

Suunto Core Steel Watch Review by George – Dublin, CA
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

I just purchased the Suunto Core Steel watch and I’m very impressed with the quality of this watch. The stainless steel construction is first rate and the watchband is also well built. I also have a Suunto Core light black watch which I wear if I don’t use the Core steel. I have encountered no problems with either watch. The positive display on both watches is easy to read and the mineral glass face does significantly reduce scratches. The functions of the steel Core have worked perfect and are very accurate. I especially like the sunrise/sunset information and the altimeter/barometer “auto” mode which autmatically switches from altimeter to barometer and back based on altimeter changes. I leave my Core on “auto” mode most of the time. I also bought the Suunto Core “standard” black watchband for the steel Core and it looks great on the steel Core. The Suunto steel Core is not cheap and it is heavy but it is one great looking, very functional watch.

Compass issues Review by Gareth Baron – Redwood City, CA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I commented about this watch a few days ago and did not mention anything about the compass. Here’s an update on the compass. It works well. The things you have to bear in mind are: (1) Do you have anything magnetic near by – like your cell phone [my blackberry has a magnetic pouch - as do most blackberrys! - it's how they sense they are in their cases!]. So once that is out of the way and I have managed to de-metal myself – keys and anything else moved into the opposite pocket, I found the compass worked very well. You have to first set up the correct declination (14.5 E for San Francisco area) and then you get an accurate pointer. I didn’t initially believe it but I used my GPS and it gave me the same readings. I also compared to an OS/surveying compass first and it gave me the same readings also. (2) make sure the compass is level. It’s reasonably easy once you get the hang of it. My niggles: having to level the compass is a nuisance. Not too troublesome. As far as accuracy, I would not use this device as my primary compass. It’s purely a back-up and a to be used as a general FYI. The main issue is that if the compass is not level, it gives a reading of +/- 5 degrees from what it should read. This margin of error can be very problematic if you are taking bearings for accurate route finding or orienteering. Ie don’t throw your good old trusty compass out just yet. There’s a reason why it’s your old ‘trusty’ compass! Many mariners have perfected these machines to give precise bearings. Technology has a way to catch up to the old analogue method!

Simply Perfect Review by PWL – Milwaukee, WI
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

Well Suunto has redeemed them selves in my book. My review of the M3 was almost totally negative but in Suunto’s defense they did fix my M3 free of charge. I still feel the same about the poor overall quality of the M3 but that is NOT the case with the Core. I bought the steel version of the Core and I’m thrilled with its quality, features and accuracy. Before I get into the features I just want to say that I think navigating through the menu system is very intuitive. I had no problems understanding the manual and didn’t even use it to set the basics right out of the box. Features: It’s a stunning time piece visually. It’s beefy, extremely well built and it will generate many comments. All have been positive. Functionality: Time- It is very accurate. I have had the watch for 6 months. I synchronized the time against the USNO atomic clock, to the second, and have not had to adjust the Core over this 6 month period. Alto-Baro- When you calibrate these instruments according to the manual they will report very accurate data. I can say the Alto, when properly calibrated, is within a few feet of my much larger portable GPS device. The Baro is tougher to review because I don’t have access to precise meteorological instruments. I have used on-line weather sites that update pressure readings every 30 minutes. From what I can tell when the Core has been properly calibrated it shows very accurate data and trends. Compass- It’s as accurate as you should need in a watch. Again, very good. Temp- I took my watch to the observation area at MKE. Let it acclimate outside for 5 minutes and compared its reading with the airports reported temperature. I used my laptop and wireless card to get the airports temperature. The Core was within +/- 1 degree of the airports reported temperature for an hour of observation using this method. Countdown/Stopwatch- It does exactly what it should. It is very nice to be able to adjust the countdown timer. I am 100% satisfied. Suunto has done it for me!!

Not that good Review by Gareth Baron – Redwood City
    Overall Rating: 2 stars

After giving this watch a positive review in earlier trials I have changed my mind!! I actually used it in New Zealand opposed to the USA. The watch functions performed well but the Compass and the Sunrise/Sunset times were completely wrong. I’m guessing that the Sunrise/Sunset times are basically setup for the Northern Hemisphere times and are not calibrated for the 6-month difference in the south of the equator (ie Africa, S. America etc). Ie June is the equivalent of December as far as seasons are concerned. I’m guessing the s/w folk screwed up! Couldn’t find out why the compass didn’t work too well. Maybe the field strength ? I adjusted the declination to account for being in a different part of the world.

Very Good but not Flawless Review by Giannis Vassagiannis – Athens, Greece
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I bought the Suunto Core 4 months ago and I have to admit that it is an excellent watch. The functions that I have used so far are very accurate. There are only two things that I don’t like. When you have to see the compass readings and use the light simultaneously, the backlight will blink. It is quite annoying. The other thing that I dislike is that the strap (I bought the black orange model) became discoloured and it looks dirty. I’ve tried washing it, but didn’t achieve anything. So I guess I have to spend 50 more to buy a new strap. For sure not orange as it will be discoloured once again. In general a great watch and gadget to own.

Love my Cores Review by George – Dublin,CA
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

I now own four different style Suunto Cores and enjoy every one of them for different reasons. I have the Light Green, Light Black, Black Orange, and Black Yellow models. I also own several other Suuntos (Obserers, Vectors,X6HR’s) but usually use one of the Cores since the technology on the Core is superior in my opinion. The Core is also more user friendly and easy to navigate. I appreciate the lightness of the Core and the large easy to read display. You can also adjust the intensity of the display (a great feature). I did have a button malfunction problem on my Light Green model. Suunto had DHL pick up my Core and Suunto sent me a brand new 2008 Core Light Green to replace the defective one. Great Suunto warranty service. I usually leave my Cores on the “Auto” mode so the barometer and altimeter can display according to my activity. This is a great feature that only the Core has. I have found the Core to be accurate and very reliable. I’m now considering the new Suunto Core All Black model. It looks great

Quality Problems Review by Bill – Brighton, MI
    Overall Rating: 1 star

First of all I love this watch when it is functioning properly. The features and display are perfect for me. However, I have had consistent problems. My initial one started to reset every few hours and you would have to go through the entire reprogramming each time. I returned it and Suunto sent me a new one. My second one started the same thing (resetting a few times a day) shortly after I got it). Returned to Suunto and they replaced it after a lengthy delay. I have had the third one a couple of months and now the battery needs to be replaced at least every week. None of these watches were abused or traumatized in any ways. My third one is now with Suunto again. Hopefully fourth time is the charm, because I really like it when it works.

Love the watch Review by Eric – Virginia Beach, VA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I just received my Suunto Core for Christmas. The only issue I have had was I had to replace the battery last week. Fortunately the core has a battery indicator and the battery was easily replaced. No other issues and I love ALL the features. I have noticed mixed reviews but also understand that the Internet is where people come to complain, rarely do you hear the success stories. The back light could be a bit brighter but I haven’t had any problems being able to see it when needed

Good Watch but needs some improvements Review by Dalke – Dublin,CA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I currently own several Suunto Core models. Overall, I like this watch and the functions it performs. I especially like the auto mode which automatically changes modes from barometer to altitude depending on your location. I have had battery issues. I think some Cores seem to use more battery life than others. There have been display and button issues as well. But overall I enjoy my Cores and will not return or sell them. Suunto customer service has been great about replacing any Core that malfunctions. I wear one of mine everyday. The battery for the Core is cheap and easy to replace. I do prefer the positive display models because they are easier to see. For me, there are many more positives than negatives.

I am a very big fan of Suunto watches. So much in fact I have 7 total. The latest addition is the Core. Great watch, love the function and it is really easy to use. Anyone that is thinking about getting a Core should fork over the extra money for this watch. P.S. To Suunto if you ever need anyone to test products before they are released please consider me. Thank you for a wonderful product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

awesome service Review by j bainbridge – Oxfordshire UK

Suunto core is a splendid wrist computer. I have the black&orange variety, tho purchased a black strap seperately. i fully utilise all of it’s many functions and have had no negative issues with it at all-ever. It is an excellent bit of kit (i am ex-British forces, so used to kit failing!)I must add, however, that it required some minor attention and so contacted suunto, and because clearly they care about their customers, they sent a DHL courier who arrived within 2 hours of my enquiry (monday afternoon) the device was replaced with a brand new one(and a spare strap)and was returned to me thursday morning! quite impressive service considering it had to go to finland! (also, i sent my mobile phone for servicing via ‘cpw’ more than 3 weeks ago – still waiting – and that’s only gone to readingUK!) excellence all the way with suunto, i am very impressed and would not hesitate to recommend the fine finland manufacturer and their products to anyone who appreciates excellent service and reliable, top quality products.

Great watch, setup is important Review by Mike Lyons – TEXAS
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

I previously owned a Nike Oregon watch, but was unhappy with the features. Got this watch recently and really love it. The only problem I had was with the compass. I was less than careful with the first calibration and got horrible results. Pulled the battery, set it on a water bottle, and very meticulously turned it at the recommended 15 second pace. Compass now works just fine. This watch is loaded and you will love it. I wear it every day and on the trail and it’s been great. Has all the features a mountaineer needs. I like the ability to choose barometer or altimeter (a feature not on the Nike watch). Love the storm alert; responding to an earlier comment about it being to ?finicky? ? I?d rather get a heads up rather than be stuck on the summit in a whole pile of snow. Very useful sunrise / sunset feature, adjustable to the region. One small thing I found interesting on the Nike, everything was metal, including the buttons. They would snag and tear all my climbing clothes, especially delicate nylons like sleeping bags and the lining of my jacket. Really pissed me off. This one is heavy duty plastic and doesn’t do that plus it’s a hell of a lot lighter. We’ll see what the battery does. haven’t run through it yet

The Core is cutting edge….but where is the iphone app for it? Review by Brad – New York, NY
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

The products Suunto makes are unbelievable awesome, I own the Core and I could not be happier with it. It is one of the coolest watches I have ever seen or owned; other watch companies try to make similar products but none of them come close to the Core’s functionality, style, price and applications. I have heard many people call it the Iphone of watches and I totally agree. With that being said where is the Core or Sunnto app for the Iphone? There definitely should be one, probably more than one. A Core or Suunto app for the iphone would be the perfect marriage/fit with the two most innovative and dynamic products on the market. I would love to have an suunto app on my iphone that warns me when the barometer is dropping and a storm maybe coming or the sun/rise set of my current location. It’s just a thought, I know I would download it

My first Suunto Review by Mike T – Orlando, FL
    Overall Rating: 3 stars

I’ve always worn Casio watches. I wanted a watch w/all of the features this Core has so I considered Casio but settled on Suunto because it looks much better and is substantially lighter and thinner. I wore my last Casio for the last 7 years and it still looked fine. I’ll be danged if I didn’t have this Core on for less than 2 days and there’s a long scratch across the face. There is no way that they are using a strong enough, scratch-resistant plastic. Other than that I am pretty pleased. The only other thing is trying to figure out how to obtain the data needed as a reference for sea-level pressure. So for now I gave up. I would buy another Suunto in the future but feel strongly they need to use higher quality scratch-resistant plastic. PS:Will be testing in Lake Tahoe soon! Used in Carribean for snorkeling and was good!

Great, but… Review by Steve – NEPA
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

All around great watch, neat functions and design. Feels like I’m not even wearing a watch. No scratches yet (knock on wood) and I have it set and for the most part, it’s accurate. The ‘but’ part of my title revolves around this- my pool is nine feet from the concrete edge. I took it off my wrist and let it sink to the bottom. It read 7 feet. I would understand if it read 8 cause the water is not up to the 9 foot brim, but 7 was a little disheartening. Second ‘but’ is this- I was hoping to catch this ‘storm alarm’ go off on my watch for some time. It has been raining almost bi-weekly here since I purchased the watch. Not once did the ‘storm alert’ go off, and there were a few thet blew into town in a matter of a couple hours. I understand the logic of the altimeter/barometer sensor of this wristop computer- but if it was set in the automatic mode it should have chimed something, either storm alarm or elevation change. I would give a recommendation of Suunto with reservation. It is cool, has great functions and IMHO, the all-black (my setup) is by far the best looking. And yes, the night light is dim so as not to ruin one’s night adapted vision- don’t pay attention to those saying it’s too dim. Actually it could go a little dimmer (ahh, my third ‘but’)

The Best of The Best! Review by Anonymous – Normal, IL

I purchased a Core Lime Green and at first I was like Whoa this is a big watch, but I got used to it. I had no issues until the countdown timer button wouldn’t work after 7 months of use, however I contacted Suunto and they replaced the watch. I use my watch to go Rafting, Canoeing, Kayaking and Hunting. The features I like most are the Storm Alarm and the Sunrise/Sunset features. It has worked everytime without fail. I need to know this important feature as to not get caught up in a flash flood when I am on the river and when to set up camp. Their home page needs a Direct phone number. It took me a while to find it. It needs to be easier to contact them. I didn’t need to but in case I did it should be easier to find. Great Watch If you’re an OUTDOORS Person

Great Watch Review by Jim Brunell – Allentown, PA
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

To those of you who wrote an unfavorable review, just think of what this watch does for the money. It is a great value, looks great, and works very very well. Take an hour our two to play with the watch to learn how to navigate the display tree, after that, its all fun! Those of you who are looking for reference data for the altimeter and barometer, just go the the internet and google “elevation” and your zip or city. One of your choices will be google maps. Thats what you want. You will find your elevation reference data there. For the weather, just look at your local forecast on the net. The barometric pressure is what you are looking for. This will be your sea level reference. The pressure transmitter within the watch can not determine the changing natural barometric pressure. This is the very same transmitter that determines the elevation based on ambient pressure. This must be “calibrated” as the weather changes to read the correct values. Once you adjust the watch with either the reference(current altitude) or sea level barometric pressure, the watch will be very accurate. If the weather changes, you will need to re-calibrate the pressure instrument to read an accurate elevation. I love this thing so much I purchased an aluminum brown version! A question to the staff, can I replace the black elastic band with the orange band? It does not appear as if the lugs on the orange band will work with the elastic band. Thanks for a great product!

Good watch – until the battery needs replacing! Review by Erik – Ontario, OR
    Overall Rating: 1 star

I purchased a Suunto Core earlier this year – it worked perfectly and was one of the most durable and comfortable watches I’ve ever owned. However, after replacing the battery the watch would randomly reset. I sent it to Suunto for repairs and, three months later, was sent a replacement. The replacement was working fine until I replaced the battery. Now the problems have returned. The watch randomly resets and the backlight and stopwatch features are no longer working. Needless to say, I am frustrated and disappointed. While it was kind of Suunto to send me a replacement, I never received any written or verbal feedback as to what the problem was, or rather, is. I am not interested in sending in my watch for another three months only to have achieve results. I have had very good experiences with Suunto products in the past and will continue to use them. However, this particular product just doesn’t make the grade.

Awsome watch Review by jordan Klein – New York, NY
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

I bought this watch, expecting a lot, and thats what i got. this watch is extremely accurate, if you calibrate it properly. if you are thinking about buying this watch, do not pay attention to the people who say that it is horrible. that was a hardware/software issue that has been fixed, i have had no problems with it so far. plus the costumer support is great, i got a real person on the line when i called. it is hard to read, even after adjusting the contrast, but if u use the back light it ok, plus in day light it is pretty easy to read. i bought the orange and black version, and i would strongly recommend it, the way that the screen looks is sick, but the orange band looks stupid, it makes the watch look cheap, so i bought the black leather one, which is significantly better. the orange was too much color for a watch and looked like an eye sore. plus the price of rubber bands are ridiculous, the orange one that can with my watch looked like one off a 10 dollar timex that you would buy in CVS. some people have said that the bezel is hard to move, it isn’t even when the watch was brand new. the thermometer is extremely accurate, it is inside the device so if it is on your hand, it will measure your skin temperature, if you slide the watch off it becomes extremely accurate. the compass is also very accurate. Note, you have to keep the compass level for it to be accurate. plus the navigation feature is neat and could be helpful in the future (aka summer) when i am sailing. this watch is surprisingly light as well, and it is not to big either, it may look big in the pictures it looks fine on my wrists. Personally i love technology, and for my wrist this is definitely on par as an iphone of watches. plus the fact that it has a depth meter means that it won’t break under water. i had a swatch that i have had for a number of years that claimed to be water proof, and broke after being in a hot tub. the whole U.I. (user interface) is really simple, i have had other menu based watches that where really annoying to mess with, but not this one. Bottom line: if you want a easy to use complex, functional watch, buy this watch, especially if it is on sale.

Advice I got on battery life Review by Al – Gladstone, Australia
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

I’ve had my Suunto Core All Black now since April 2009. I just had my second battery change. The first was in November 2009. So I got 7 months on the battery that came with the watch & only about 4 months after I changed it. When I bought my replacement battery the other day the shop assistant told me that it’s important when handling the battery that you don’t put your fingers on both the positive top face & negative bottom face at the same time because this forms a circuit & the contact can drain the battery. She said it’s better to touch the battery on the sides only, because the positive connection is actually on both the top face & the sides, so if you only touch the top & sides but not the bottom, you won’t drain the battery & will get the best life out of it. So that’s what I’ve done so we’ll see how long the battery lasts this time. Besides the short battery life the watch has otherwise worked flawlessly since I’ve had it. I found the battery cover hard to unscrew the first time I changed the battery but it was a lot easier the second time.

My everything watch Review by Tristan – La Jolla, CA
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

This watch goes everywhere with me. I chose the all-black for the subdued look. It has not been too dark, changing the contrast is easy. I chose this watch in general because it has all the features I wanted: Digital Compass, Time/Timers, Alt. and Depth. Some have complained about the depth only going to 30ft but that’s plenty enough for my non-diving purposes and for diving below that I’d recommend an actual computer (computers are larger for a reason – lots of data to display). I have used this in combination with a computer as the computer did not have a temp gauge or compass. The temperature gauge may not be as useful on land but works perfectly underwater. This watch has been perfect for my lobster collecting in shallow waters. It tells me the depth and temperature (both very accurately) and has saved me some good time on very foggy days with the digital compass. The timer is quick to set for when I’m doing lab work, such that I’ve been able to remove my other timers. The alarm is my daily alarm clock with a nice yes/no snooze function. I’ve also been climbing/skiing with the watch and found the altimeter to be accurate (after calibration of course). I can’t say enough good things about this watch really. I was hesitant at first given the size of it and my thin wrist but it has not seemed odd and I have been nothing but pleased.

Update Review by Nick Miloslavich – San Leandro, CA
    Overall Rating: 5 stars

This is an amazing watch!!! It’s been through so much with me, such as motorcycling, dirtbiking, parasailing, surfing, in the sand on the beach, several thousand feet up on ziplines in Maui, all the while maintaining the utmost in accuracy and functionality. It’s been a conversation piece for people involved in extreme sports and otherwise outdoor adventurers. It has taking a licking, and kept on ticking…and it is extremely light @ 96 or so grams. If u are at all interested in this watch I give it my personal stamp of approval, and that says a lot for a person such as myself who is hard to please and really REALLY researches things before buying them. I don’t work for suunto in any way, shape, or form. And I’ve looked @ hundreds of watches from MTM, invicta, Seiko, citizen, g-shock, etc. etc.

Summary: if u want a digital ABC watch with depth meter, thermometer, stopwatch, countdown timer, day/date calendar, and sunrise sunset times for almost anywhere, look no further than your very own, suunto core.

Core Issues Review by IB – Morgantown, WV
    Overall Rating: 2 stars

This is a great watch and altimeter. If you travel, forget the compass functions though, it must be recalibrated any time you travel. Sound like no big deal, except Suunto did not bother to provide a function to do this, you must remove the battery and set up everything on the watch again. I have seen 180 degree errors after a flight while 60 degree errors are the norm. In other words carry a compass to see if your Suunto compass is working. The thermometer works great, within 10 degrees or so after you take the watch off and let it set for an hour. The $180 stainless strap is held together by rubber pieces which disintegrated after 2 years. Other than that a great watch.

core all black Review by Adam Faulkner – Little Rock,AR
    Overall Rating: 4 stars

I got a suunto core for Christmas last year and I wanted a watch that would benefit me when doing numerous activities such as cycling, fishing, hunting, hiking and just an everyday all around watch. Well, I definitely found it in this watch. When I read a lot of the reviews on this site I almost expected there to be some kind of issue with the backlight or the waterproof screen at some point because of all the complaints I had read on this site. But its almost like some of these people are not talking about the same watch that I got. No problems, no complaints, does exactly what it is suppose to do. The only thing that I wish was more accurate is the temp gauge but if you take it off your wrist for about 5 minutes it does way better. Anyways, if this is the kind of watch you are looking for then I say go for it as I can’t tell you how many people have asked me what kind of watch do I have and how good it looks etc. I give it a 9 out of a 1 to 10 scale.

I have had my core for 2 months and recently used it while hiking in the grand tetons and yellowstone. I must say I was quite impressed. We crossed the continental divide numerous times and the altimeter was within 25-35 ft. The compass also came in handy as a quick check. It did not replace my hand held compass. The barometer also works very well.

I was in Arizona in August, and I left my core outside to check the temperature. I forgot it was out there, went to check on it (30-40 minutes later) and it was in the sun showing 140 degrees Fahrenheit. I was a little concerned as I know that is definitely the upper limit of what it may or may not be able to handle, but after 2 months from that happening I have had ZERO problems. AMAZING watch I love it more and more everyday I wear it.

Bought myself the Suunto Core, Light Green as an early Christmas present and am loving it. I use this watch mainly for hiking. It is extremely easy to use, more so than Casio’s Pathfinder (also an excellent watch), is very accurate, and easy to read. I love the storm alarm, which works impeccably, and the lock feature to lock the “mode” button so that it does not accidentally get pushed and change modes. Suuntowatches.com provided excellent purchasing and shipping services. I received the watch within two days of purchase. Definitely recommend this watch and this site to all.
